What do I need?
You have three basic options to move away from PC-to-PC remote operation:
1) Use the RTE controller only (audio return via a remote PC)
At the radio location, you will need the RTE, an Internet connection via a router, a PC running SKYPE to provide audio, a PC sound card to radio interface device (to interface speaker and mic audio to the computer). Your Internet service provider (ISP) must not intercept VoIP traffic that is not their own. Usually not a problem with Skype traffic.
At the remote location, you will need a PC running Windows XP/2000/NT, Rig control software, and SKYPE to make a phone call to the PC at the radio site. You will also need an Internet connection. The current software is not compatible with 64 bit operating systems such as Windows7.
Advantages:
- Remote control with any Rig Control software
- Real time rig control response (nearly as fast as local control)
- Aux outputs to switch antennas, amplifiers, etc.
- Station control independent of a remote PC.
- Network system resistant to hacker attacks (open ports don't point to real computers to hack)
- Auto station start/stop upon connect/disconnect from Internet (fail-safe system shutdown)
- 3 minute anti-lockup timer
- Remote desktop PC providing audio may be rebooted directly from the RTE outputs.
- Reduced system complexity and improved reliability of connection as compared to PC-to-PC solutions
2) Use the RTE/FXO with a wireline telephone line for audio return (this is the RTE+the A2T audio/FXO interface card)
At the radio location, you will need the RTE/FXO combination unit, an Internet connection via a router, and an available telephone line. The RTE/FXO will auto-answer incoming calls only when you access your system.
At the remote location, you will need a PC running Windows XP/2000/NT, Rig control software, and SKYPE to make a phone call to the RTE/FXO unit at the radio site. You will also need an Internet connection.
Advantages:
- All of the above RTE features and advantages plus...
- Reduced audio latency as compared to Skype to Skype calls via two PCs.
- Eliminate possible VoIP intercepts by local ISPs (many ISPs may soon block any VoIP traffic other than their own)
- Radio audio interfaces built-in
- Only ties up phone line when station is actually in use. Compatible with answering machines and FAX lines.
- No PC is required at the radio site at all.
3) Use the RTE/FXO and eliminate the need for a wireline telephone line by using an Internet Analog Telephone Adapter (ATA).
Additionally, if you want to go 100% Internet (but beware of the audio latency), you will need an ATA adapter to create a virtual telephone line. Some basic information on ATAs is available by clicking HERE. These devices are available for low cost. Like a regular phone line, the RTE/FXO will not tie this up and it may be used for other calling purposes.
These are cheap and easy to set up with no monthly fees. Why spend hundreds more when the RTE/FXO gives you BOTH OPTIONS?
4) No additional equipment to lug around. Just you and your PC. Unlike alternatives that require physical Ethernet jacks, you may operate via WIFI connections when away.
